The Freezer Hostel & Culture Centre

The Freezer is a multi-award winning social hostel in the tiny fishing village of Rif (population 165) in Iceland.

About Our Hostel

On top of that, The Freezer is also a cultural centre for the Snæfellsnes peninsula in West Iceland, a professional theatre and an international artist´s residency. Our premises are in a renovated and recycled Fish factory, which now houses 4 rooms and 2 family apartments, a big common space / bar / concert space and two big studio performance spaces where theatre, big concerts, workshops and other cultural and artsy happenings take place.

In the summer (June, July and August) we run a weekly schedule of events and in the winter we also have regular events although they are fewer and further between them. This year the schedule included two theatre shows, two nights of live music, gigs with big Icelandic artists, multiple dance performances, yoga workshops, pub quiz nights, bingo nights and stand up.

The whole business is owned and run by myself. I´m a trained actor from Rose Bruford Drama school in London and Rif is my hometown. I´m a firm believer in the relevance and importance of culture in rural places and that´s why I made it my goal to set up this place, to bring culture and arts to a place where most people would state it didn´t belong anymore.

The Freezer has been built up with a lot of hard work, a lot of my own resources and without big investment or ridiculous bank loans. (Given Icelander´s history with banks and loans I decided to save money and do it myself). The place is cozy, retro style and the atmosphere is based on trust and mutual respect. The decor is mostly second hand and retro style although the bunk beds are relatively new and so are the showers and toilets. There is a lot of artwork on my walls and in the coming year there are plans to have all the sleeping rooms decorated and painted by Icelandic artists in different themes that relate to the names that the rooms have been given.
